Bulgarian pronunciation guide

Bulgarian is the Slavic language that lost its cases and kept its sounds — it has a definite article suffixed to the noun, no infinitive, and a vowel reduction system driven by unmarked, unpredictable stress.

How the Bulgarian sound system works

Six vowels including ъ /ɤ/, a mid back unrounded vowel with no English counterpart. Consonants come in hard and soft pairs as in Russian, though the palatalisation contrast is less pervasive. Unstressed vowels reduce, though less drastically than in Russian: а tends toward ъ, о toward у, and е toward и.

The 5 sounds English speakers get wrong

These are ordered by how much damage they do. The first two or three are worth more of your time than everything else on this page combined, because they are the ones that change meaning rather than merely signalling an accent.

ɤ

close-mid back unrounded vowel (ъ)

България, ъгъл, сън

Why it goes wrong. English speakers substitute schwa or /ʌ/. In Bulgarian it is a full stressable vowel, not a reduction.

How to fix it. Say /o/ and completely unround the lips while keeping the tongue back. It appears in extremely common words, so getting it wrong is constant.

ʲ

palatalised consonants

бял, ключ, Кольо

Why it goes wrong. Produced as consonant plus y.

How to fix it. Raise the tongue body during the consonant. Bulgarian marks softness with ь or a following я/ю.

x

voiceless velar fricative (х)

хляб, хубав, тих

Why it goes wrong. Produced as English /h/, which is too weak.

How to fix it. Real velar friction, tongue up against the soft palate.

t͡s

affricate ц

цар, цвете, месец

Why it goes wrong. Split into two sounds word-initially.

How to fix it. One segment. Transfer the end of "cats" to word-initial position.

ɐ

unstressed vowel reduction

вода, море, глава

Why it goes wrong. Learners give every vowel full value.

How to fix it. Unstressed а drifts toward ъ and unstressed о toward у. Since stress is unwritten, this has to be learned per word.

Stress, rhythm and tone

Stress is lexical, mobile and unwritten, and it interacts with vowel reduction, so the same compounding problem as Russian applies. Bulgarian has no vowel length and no tone. The postposed definite article shifts the phonological shape of nouns and needs to be drilled as part of the word.

What the writing system does and does not tell you

Cyrillic, but with several letters read differently from Russian — щ is /ʃt/, not /ɕː/, and ъ is a full vowel rather than a hard sign. Learners coming from Russian must actively unlearn these. Stress is unmarked outside dictionaries.

A four-week practice plan

  1. Week 1 — ъ in stressed position, contrasted against о, а and schwa.
  2. Week 2 — Cyrillic letter values that differ from Russian.
  3. Week 3 — Reduction patterns on high-frequency nouns.
  4. Week 4 — Definite article forms drilled with audio.

Teaching or learning Bulgarian with Teachee

Teachee supports Bulgarian as a lesson language (bg-BG). During a lesson you record a sentence, and it comes back transcribed, translated and — where the phonetic data exists — with a transcription your student can read.

Where automatic phonetics are not available, the recording still is — and for a language like Bulgarian a teacher’s own recording of a word, attached to that word, is worth more than any generated transcription.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bulgarian hard to pronounce for English speakers?

Moderate. The specific difficulties are close-mid back unrounded vowel (ъ), palatalised consonants, voiceless velar fricative (х) — not the language as a whole. Does Bulgarian spelling tell you how to pronounce a word?

Where does the stress go in Bulgarian?

Stress is lexical, mobile and unwritten, and it interacts with vowel reduction, so the same compounding problem as Russian applies. Bulgarian has no vowel length and no tone. The postposed definite article shifts the phonological shape of nouns and needs to be drilled as part of the word.

What is the fastest way to fix a Bulgarian accent?

Work on the specific contrasts that carry meaning rather than on the accent in general. Week 1 — ъ in stressed position, contrasted against о, а and schwa.
