Greek pronunciation guide

Modern Greek has a small, clean five-vowel system and marks stress on every polysyllabic word in writing — which makes it much easier to pronounce than its alphabet suggests, once you stop reading the letters as Ancient Greek.

How the Greek sound system works

Five vowels, no length, no reduction — closer to Spanish than to any other European language in this respect. The consonant system includes voiced and voiceless fricative pairs where English has stops: β is /v/, δ is /ð/, γ is /ɣ/ or /ʝ/. Consonant clusters are moderate and there is no aspiration on stops.

The 5 sounds English speakers get wrong

These are ordered by how much damage they do. The first two or three are worth more of your time than everything else on this page combined, because they are the ones that change meaning rather than merely signalling an accent.

ɣ

voiced velar fricative (γ)

γάλα, εγώ, γυναίκα

Why it goes wrong. Read as English /ɡ/ because the letter looks like a g.

How to fix it. Continuous friction at the soft palate with voicing — the voiced counterpart of the *ach* sound. Before front vowels it shifts to /ʝ/, a palatal.

ð

voiced dental fricative (δ)

δέκα, παιδί, δρόμος

Why it goes wrong. Read as /d/.

How to fix it. It is the th of "this", always. δ is never a stop in Modern Greek.

θ

voiceless dental fricative (θ)

θάλασσα, μαθηματικά

Why it goes wrong. Read as /t/ by speakers whose L1 lacks it; English speakers usually get this one right.

How to fix it. The th of "think".

x

voiceless velar fricative (χ)

χέρι, όχι, χαρά

Why it goes wrong. Read as /k/ or /tʃ/.

How to fix it. Velar friction before back vowels, palatal /ç/ before front vowels — the same split as German.

i

the iotacism problem

είναι, πύλη, οικογένεια

Why it goes wrong. Six different spellings — ι, η, υ, ει, οι, υι — all pronounced /i/. Learners try to differentiate them.

How to fix it. They are identical in sound. The spelling is historical. Accept it and learn each word’s spelling separately.

Stress, rhythm and tone

Stress is lexical but written on every polysyllabic word with an acute accent, which removes the single biggest source of learner error in languages like Russian and Romanian. Greek is syllable-timed with no vowel reduction. Stress can move across inflected forms, but the accent mark moves with it, so the writing always tells you.

What the writing system does and does not tell you

The Greek alphabet is 24 letters and takes days to learn. The traps are all about not importing Ancient Greek or mathematical values: β is v not b, and the digraphs μπ, ντ, γκ represent /b/, /d/, /ɡ/ respectively. Because stress is always marked and vowels never reduce, a written Modern Greek word tells you almost exactly how to say it.

Recurring mistakes

A four-week practice plan

  1. Week 1 — Alphabet with correct modern values, especially the fricatives.
  2. Week 2 — Digraphs μπ ντ γκ τσ τζ in real words.
  3. Week 3 — The front/back split of γ and χ.
  4. Week 4 — Read aloud from accented text at increasing speed; the accents make this unusually productive.

Teaching or learning Greek with Teachee

Teachee supports Greek as a lesson language (el-GR). During a lesson you record a sentence, and it comes back transcribed, translated and — where the phonetic data exists — with a transcription your student can read.

Where automatic phonetics are not available, the recording still is — and for a language like Greek a teacher’s own recording of a word, attached to that word, is worth more than any generated transcription.

Frequently asked questions

Is Greek hard to pronounce for English speakers?

Moderate. The specific difficulties are voiced velar fricative (γ), voiced dental fricative (δ), voiceless dental fricative (θ) — not the language as a whole. Modern Greek has a small, clean five-vowel system and marks stress on every polysyllabic word in writing — which makes it much easier to pronounce than its alphabet suggests, once you stop reading the letters as Ancient Greek.

Does Greek spelling tell you how to pronounce a word?

Where does the stress go in Greek?

Greek is syllable-timed with no vowel reduction. Stress can move across inflected forms, but the accent mark moves with it, so the writing always tells you.

What is the fastest way to fix a Greek accent?

Work on the specific contrasts that carry meaning rather than on the accent in general. Week 1 — Alphabet with correct modern values, especially the fricatives.
